PINOY MEDIA MOGULS:
Media Ownership
in the Philippines
The Philippine traditional media landscape has always been dominated by family-owned corporations, led by the Lopezes of ABS-CBN and GMA’s Gozon-Duavit-Jimenez triumvirate. This is the same with the local newspaper industry with the Prietos’ (PDI), Belmontes (PStar) and Yaps (MB) dominating nationwide print circulations.
With the diversification of the media industry in the advent of Internet and upsurge in mobile telecommunications come the entry of PLDT’s Manny Pangilinan in the mainstream media business - TV, radio, and even print. Venturing along with him are the Ayalas of Globe Telecom and San Miguel’s Ramon Ang who now owns 30 percent share of GMA.
Media ownership in the Philippines thrives in a very monopolistic corporate environment. ABS-CBN, the country’s biggest media conglomeration, is only a parcel of the Lopez’s wide range of business interests from power generation and distribution to manufacturing, real estate and infrastructure. The family ranks 22nd in the list of Forbes Richest Filipinos.
Don Eugenio "Eñing" Lopez Sr., grandson of the haciendero patriarch Don Basilio Lopez (1800 - 1875), is the man behind the country's largest power distributor Manila Electric Co. (now Meralco) and Chronicle Broadcasting Network, now what can be considered one of the most popular household brands for million Pinoys worldwide, the "Kapamilya Network," ABS-CBN.
GMA 7, the "Kapuso Network," traces its roots from its American founder Robert La Rue Stewart before the trio of Felipe Gozon, Menardo Jimenez and Gilberto Duavit Jr. took over in 1975. Since then, GMA has expanded its activities from radio and TV broadcasting to film production, music recording, film syndication and international channel operations, among others.
Only few months since rebranding, 9TV is set to change image anew with the entry of CNN Philippines by first quarter of 2015. The popular global media brand CNN has engaged in similar joint ventures in other countries like Indonesia, Chile, India and Japan.
